“Disconnecting Intimacy”

The things dear to us have changed over time as the world tipped on its axis. We often categorize those things which we love most by family, friends, and life (sometimes food) but at the same time could not tell you the last time we saw our “best” friend off screen. Our phones and computers and jobs have taken over those weekend visits and after-school hangouts. Afternoon lunch hours in with our co-workers have turned into affairs silent as funerals with no information to flit back and forth as with times before. All the gossip is done by text and now there are no longer things to speak of. We use that time to txt other people and deliver information about our day making “how was your day?” obsolete as caveman paintings. So what do we as women hold dear today in this day of disintegrating human connection through wires, signals, and satellites? We often hold dear that which we do not have readily available to us. That can be numerous things, but these days for the modern woman, what it is held most dear is intimacy.
We crave the connection of our mothers, fathers, children, and lovers. Thus we hold them closer to our hearts than anything else in this world. When we do not have intimacy, which is essential to the vulnerable female in all of us, we wither under the strain of everyday life. A text or a Facebook message to our mother father, or lover does not sufficiently cure what hearing a voice, looking into eyes, and caresses of hand can. With the gentle touch on your jawline of your lover’s hand, the comforting squeeze of your father’s arms, or the tender warmth of your mother’s voice and bosom, we flourish, bloom and become most beautiful. SO with this disconnection of what we as women hold dear to our hearts and souls, we are spiraling down to cold creatures who often diagnosed with depression, anxiety, or low self-esteem. We began to communicate with snippy remarks through unfeeling channels of bitterness because we forget that it’s okay to hold hands and talk to each other with our mouths and throats. We give in to the mechanical love that is demonstrated through a text message or Facebook status of “I love you” or “I miss you” and mistake it for something tender. We therefore miss out because there are no lips and tongue to shape the words and no voice to breathe life and meaning into it.
Divas and Women on Top when was the last time you were able to have true conversation and intimacy with a lover, parent, or friend? When have you put down the phone during lunch to look your companion in the eye and show true interest in what they are saying? How is the woman, the female soul, flourishing when intimacy is lacking in this technologically cold world. The modern woman who is single or involved, is she happy when she receives a message or txt of I love you on a busy day? Does she feel the same flutter in her chest as when that same message sender shows up with a lunch and a kind word in her ear to ease the wave of the day? How are we shaping up without something as essential and dear as intimacy in our brave new world? They we as humans are internationally closer than we ever have been. Is that true, or have we become disconnected?
Now for a question for the average woman in all of us: How do you attain your daily dose of intimacy in the busy world of texting, messaging, and Facebooking?
